Comcast Honors Leaders And Achievers® Scholarship Recipients

Jackson (MS) area students honored at Comcast’s local headquarters

June 29, 2015: Jackson, Miss. — Comcast recently honored 17 Jackson area students as recipients of its Leaders and Achievers scholarship awards.  Hosted at the Comcast Demo Lab in Jackson, the event was attended by award recipients and their families, as well as several state representatives and elected officials in celebration of this important milestone. Comcast also gave one student a Founders Scholarship for $5,000.

The Comcast Leaders and Achievers Scholarship Program awards $1,000 scholarships to students that actively strive to achieve their greatest potential through their academic success, their community involvement and their leadership efforts. These students were selected by Comcast with the help of local principals and guidance counselors, to be recognized as the best and the brightest high school seniors.

State Representative Jeramey Anderson, celebrated as the youngest African American representative in the nation, served as the keynote speaker for the event.  Elected to the Legislature in 2013, he became the youngest African American to be appointed to this position at the age of 22.

“The experience was life changing for me today,” said Anderson.  “It’s funny because I was supposed to be there to inspire this group of young scholarship recipients but I honestly think they inspired me.  It’s such a great experience to see so many young people working to continue their education.  If the future of Mississippi’s youth is anything like the young people I met today, then I say we’re going to be ok.”

“Our Leaders and Achievers Scholarship winners embody academic excellence and community service,” said Doug Guthrie, Regional SVP for Comcast. “We are honored to recognize these students, and look forward to supporting them in their educational endeavors.”
