With plans to provide 400 total access points, Comcast will strengthen connectivity in Old Towne Ridgeland, City of Canton, City of Madison and Jackson State University

Jackson, MS (May 19, 2015) – Comcast announced today it will add another 200 Xfinity WiFi outdoor hotspots throughout the Jackson metropolitan area this year, bringing the total count to 400 by year-end.  Specific locations will include public spaces like parks, shopping centers and school campuses.

Canton, Miss., Mayor Arnel Bolden welcomed the added connectivity to his city’s town square: “With its continued technological investment in Jackson, Comcast has prepared our region for the future.  Whether our citizens are shopping, dining, or just enjoying a stroll around town, they’ll virtually always enjoy connectivity thanks to Comcast.”

This announcement complements the company’s thousands of existing residential and business hotspots in the area, which most Xfinity Internet customers can access at no additional cost, making Comcast the largest Wi-Fi provider in the region and the state.

In October 2014, Comcast announced its initial deployment of 200 outdoor hotspots to the city’s busiest areas. Today’s announcement unveils another 200 access points, supporting areas such as Old Town Ridgeland, the City of Madison along Highway 51, Jackson State University and the City of Canton.

“Now more than ever, our customers are on the go – and they need to be connected whenever possible,” said Comcast VP of Sales and Marketing Kerry McKelvey. “Our goal is to bridge the connectivity gap, and offer service to Jackson’s busiest outdoor areas, at no charge to the customer.”

Comcast offers the fastest network of Wi-Fi hotspots in the nation, ensuring customers have the best available online experience in their home, at work and in popular outdoor areas. According to Cisco, 88 percent of all U.S. data traffic on mobile and portable devices will travel over Wi-Fi by 2018.

Comcast’s advanced Wi-Fi network consists of:

  • Xfinity WiFi Outdoor Hotspots: Comcast is placing another 200 Xfinity WiFi hotspots in popular public locations across the region, from shopping centers and parks to commuter stations. These hotspots will be deployed in many of Jackson’s most utilized areas, and will bring Comcast’s total outdoor hotspot investment to 400 across the marketplace.
  • Xfinity WiFi Hotspots in Business Locations: Most Comcast Business Internet customers are eligible to receive an Xfinity WiFi hotspot for no additional charge when they order service. This is a value-added feature that directly improves their patrons’ experience. Examples of customers include restaurants, offices and retail establishments.
  • Xfinity Home Hotspots: Launched across greater Jackson in April 2014, the initiative provide residential customers with Xfinity Wireless Gateways the ability to have a second “xfinitywifi” signal (or SSID) in their home that is separate and distinct from their private and secure home Wi-Fi signal. This second signal provides visiting Xfinity Internet customers Wi-Fi access without the need to use the homeowner’s private network and password.

Finding the nearest Xfinity WiFi hotspot

Most Xfinity Internet customers can access Xfinity WiFi hotspots by selecting “xfinitywifi” from the list of available networks on their laptops or mobile devices and entering their Comcast email and password. The Xfinity WiFi App, available for download on both iOS and Android devices, makes it easy to locate business and outdoor hotspots, or customers can visit the hotspot finder map online at www.xfinity.com/wifi.
