Comcast To Add 200 New Outdoor Hotspots In Jackson This Year

Company offers more hotspots than any other Mississippi provider, at no additional cost to customers

Jackson, MS (Oct. 14, 2014) – Comcast announced today it will add 200 new Xfinity WiFi outdoor hotspots throughout the Jackson metropolitan area this year.  Specific locations are expected to include public spaces like parks, shopping centers and commuter stations.  This announcement complements the company’s thousands of existing residential and business hotspots in the area, which most Xfinity Internet customers can access at no additional cost, making Comcast the largest Wi-Fi provider in the region and the state of Mississippi.

“Comcast’s announcement today goes a long way toward making Jackson a truly connected city, helping our residents enjoy an unparalleled and virtually ubiquitous online experience,” Jackson Mayor Tony Yarber said. “With partners like Comcast focused on Jackson’s future, we will continue to enjoy a reputation as a technology-forward destination for residents and businesses.”

Over the past two years, Comcast has doubled local Internet speeds for customers at no additional cost, launched the X1 platform and Xfinity Home, and introduced new apps like Xfinity TV Go, which allows customers to view live or On Demand content anywhere, any time.

“Our Jackson area customers will be able to take advantage of these outdoor hotspots to access the Internet from their mobile devices in high-traffic locations where they typically work, commute, shop and dine,” Comcast Regional SVP Doug Guthrie said. “Between their home hotspots, those we’ve deployed for local businesses and the 200 outdoor access points, customers will be able to easily connect to family, friends, information and entertainment.”

With more than 3 million Xfinity WiFi hotspots and 8 million planned by year-end, Comcast offers the fastest network of Wi-Fi hotspots in the nation; ensuring customers have the fastest available online experience in their home, at work and in popular outdoor areas. According to Cisco, 88 percent of all U.S. data traffic on mobile and portable devices will travel over Wi-Fi by 2018.

Comcast’s advanced Wi-Fi network consists of:

  • Xfinity WiFi Outdoor Hotspots: Comcast is placing 200 Xfinity WiFi hotspots in popular public locations across the region from shopping centers and parks to commuter stations. These hotspots will be deployed in many of Jackson’s most utilized areas.
  • Xfinity WiFi Hotspots in Business Locations: Most Comcast Business Internet customers are eligible to receive an Xfinity WiFi hotspot for no additional charge when they order service. This is a value-added feature that directly improves their patrons’ experience. Examples of customers include restaurants, offices and retail establishments.
  • Xfinity Home Hotspots: Launched across greater Jackson in April 2014, the initiative provides about 15,000 residential customers with Xfinity Wireless Gateways the ability to have a second “xfinitywifi” signal (or SSID) in their home that is separate and distinct from their private and secure home Wi-Fi signal. This second signal provides visiting Xfinity Internet customers Wi-Fi access without the need to use the homeowner’s private network and password.

Finding the nearest Xfinity WiFi hotspot

Most Xfinity Internet customers can access Xfinity WiFi hotspots by selecting “xfinitywifi” from the list of available networks on their laptops or mobile devices and entering their Comcast email and password. The Xfinity WiFi App, available for download on both iOS and Android devices, makes it easy to locate business and outdoor hotspots, or customers can visit the hotspot finder map online at www.xfinity.com/wifi.
