Comcast to Expand Broadband Network in Colbert County, Alabama

Comcast to deliver high-speed internet access and full suite of Xfinity services to underserved residents and businesses

 (Colbert, AL): May 14, 2021 – In partnership with the State of Alabama and Governor Kay Ivey, Comcast today announced it will expand its broadband network to hundreds of residents, businesses and local municipalities in the vicinity of Leighton and Nitrate City in Colbert County, Alabama. Comcast has been awarded a $453,032 grant through the Alabama Broadband Accessibility Fund which is administered by the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs (ADECA). Through this investment and Comcast funding, Comcast will deliver high-speed internet and its full suite of Xfinity services to underserved residents and businesses in Colbert County.

“I am very pleased to see the expansion of broadband to several areas of Colbert County,” said Alabama State Senator Larry Stutts.  “In today’s world, broadband is necessary for so many daily activities that one can hardly function without it. I appreciate Governor Kay Ivey and Commissioner Ken Boswell making this wise use of tax dollars and thank Comcast for providing these essential services.”

In addition to Comcast’s traditional services, residential customers in the expanded area of Colbert County will have access to the following Xfinity services:

• Xfinity xFi, allowing high-speed Internet customers to personalize and control their in-home Wi-Fi experience;
• Xfinity Flex, a simplified streaming solution for Xfinity Internet customers who do not want traditional TV video service;
• The X1 entertainment platform and voice remote; and
• Xfinity Home, a total home security and automation solution

Businesses in the expanded area of Colbert County will also have access to a full suite of Comcast Business internet, voice, and video services.

This expansion will also provide families with access to Comcast’s Internet Essentials program, the nation’s largest and most successful broadband adoption initiative for low-income families. Internet Essentials provides low-cost broadband service for $9.95 a month, digital literacy training and discounted computers.

Nationally, over the past five years and across Comcast’s service area, the company has quadrupled its overall network capacity and doubled its fiber miles; deployed gigabit speeds to more homes than any other Internet Service Provider; upgraded all of its speed tiers; and rolled out an entirely new class of gateways – the xFi Gateway and the xFi Advanced Gateway which are designed for higher speeds and blanket most homes with Wi-Fi coverage.
