How Comcast RISE Empowers Small Businesses 

The Comcast RISE program helps support small businesses nationwide. On April 15, 2025, it was announced that Nashville was selected as one of five total Comcast RISE regions for the comprehensive grant program. Starting now through May 31, 2025, local entrepreneurs are invited to apply at www.comcastrise.com. A total of 100 metro Nashville grants will be awarded and announced in August 2025. 

What is Comcast RISE? 

Comcast RISE is supporting the growth of small businesses and entrepreneurs committed to uplifting their local communities. Eligible small businesses receive comprehensive packages that include a technology makeover, creative production, a media schedule, educational resources, a $5,000 monetary grant, and business consultation services. 

Meet Chris Afotey at Threads by Dreads 

A former Comcast RISE recipient, Threads by Dreads started as a hobby of making scarves that showcased Chris Afotey as both an American and a Ghanaian. It was really her mom that saw the vision and told her that her talents would lead to bigger dreams and opportunities. With the success of her brand, she has been able to expand her reach in the form of social enterprise to help 42 students in Ghana achieve academic success. Her fashion brand has helped to fund future doctors, bio-medical engineers, agricultural experts, and more. For her hometown of Nashville, Tennessee – she loves introducing others to her Ghanaian culture – from traditions to food to art.  

Chris Afotey shared with us her experiences as a former Comcast RISE recipient. 

What About the Grant Interested You? 

Chris: I found out about Comcast RISE on social media. I clicked through to the website and went through the application portal and the process was super easy. I’m glad to hear that Comcast is continuing to invest in the future and making it more attainable, without tricks or gimmicks, for small business owners to get a little help.  

What Drives Your Passion for Your Business? 

Chris: For me, the foundation and the students that receive the scholarship. Seeing their updates throughout their academic journey, I’m reminded that for many, they are creating family firsts – to attend college or graduate with a specialized degree … Even more so, seeing how they give back to their families and communities, by returning home to purchase a home or build a business – it is truly inspiring, and as a small business owner, aspirational on how I can continue to uplift those around me.  

I have a first-hand look at multi-generational change in Ghana from Nashville, Tennessee and it’s amazing.  

What Advice Would You Give Those Thinking of Applying for Comcast RISE? 

Chris: Just like the popular motto – just do it. Truly, what is the harm? For Comcast RISE, or any grant program, you can reap rewards by just applying. Don’t see this as just the offers of the grant, but this is an opportunity to network and get to know others in Nashville. We are all just one or two degrees away from the next person to change our life.
