Comcast Volunteers Empower Communities Across the Southeast

Comcast Team UP volunteers distribute over 400 backpacks in Mississippi, Arkansas, and Tennessee

This week, Comcast’s Team UP volunteers made a significant impact across Jackson and Tupelo, Mississippi, Little Rock, Arkansas and Memphis, Tennessee to provide students with the tools they need for success and to advance digital literacy. Team UP, Comcast’s national volunteer program, connects employees with opportunities to make a tangible difference in their communities.

As part of Local Connected Culture Days (LCCD), Comcast employees throughout the South partnered with community organizations to distribute over 300 backpacks filled with school supplies and Comcast Internet Essentials materials. LCCD not only fosters community interaction but also allows employees to engage with senior leadership.

The day kicked off with two morning events. In Tupelo, Mississippi, Team UP volunteers gathered at the Comcast Technical Facility, assembling backpacks with essential supplies. These were later donated to Milam Elementary School, benefiting students in need. Meanwhile, in Little Rock, Arkansas, volunteers teamed up with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Central Arkansas to distribute backpacks to members of the Penick Boys and Girls Club, a Lift Zone since 2020. This Lift Zone has been a vital resource, offering Wi-Fi and internet access to support over 200 at-risk students in their educational journey.

“We are excited to serve as a Comcast Lift Zone,” said Cindy Doramus, CEO of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Arkansas. “We are also very grateful for Comcast’s support and the Team UP service project. Being the recipient of these school supplies is wonderful, because it ensures our kids have the tools they need to reach their full potential.”

In the afternoon, Team UP efforts continued with two more events. In Jackson, Mississippi, volunteers partnered with the 100 Black Men of Jackson. This organization, a foundation grant recipient since 2023, plans to distribute backpacks through its mentorship program. In Memphis, Tennessee, volunteers partnered with 2024 foundation grant recipient, the Ira Samelson Boys & Girls Club, to distribute backpacks to its members. Both events reinforced Comcast’s commitment to supporting underrepresented communities.

Since its launch in 2020, Lift Zones have provided essential internet access to communities in need, complementing the Internet Essentials program, which offers in-home broadband connectivity to lower-income families.
