National Veterans and Military Families Month in the South at Comcast

November is National Veterans and Military Families Month, a time to recognize and thank those who served in the armed forces for their contributions to our country, as well as thank their families. At Comcast, we appreciate our dedicated veteran and military family employees, whose skills and experiences help our teams succeed every day.

Since 2015, Comcast has hired more than 21,000 veterans, and Comcast NBCUniversal has been included on the annual “Best for Vets: Employers” list by Military Times for many years.  The company is proud to have more than 9,000 employees in our ERG Veterans Network, VetNet for short. Employee Resource Groups like VetNet are employee-led groups that bring colleagues together to host networking events, community service activities, and educational offerings across our footprint.

This Veterans and Military Families Month, VetNet members share what their military ties mean to them. Sabrina Filmore is a Comcast Installation and Service Manager in Tennessee and JaMichael Eatmon is a Comcast Construction Manager in Georgia. Sabrina and JaMichael are the VetNet leads for Comcast’s South region. We sat down with Sabrina and JaMichael to learn more about them, their experiences at Comcast and what being part of VetNet means to them.

Tell us a bit about yourself and your military background.

Sabrina: My father is an Air Force veteran who served in the Korean War. I served four years of active duty in telecommunications in the Army. My husband and brother also served in the Army. With my husband’s service, we were dual-military for two years and I was a military spouse for a year while my husband remained active, and I started my career here at Comcast. Since being out of the military, I have tried to stay active helping with events to give back to our communities and have been an active member in our Veterans Network.

JaMichael: I enlisted in the U.S. Army directly after high school, serving four years active duty as an Armor Crewman (Tanker). Then I served four years in the Army Reserve as a Personnel Service Specialist. My military time introduced me to seeing different parts of the world and experiencing different cultures, but also, I was able to meet other soldiers that I’m still friends with today–we treat each other like family.

What does National Veterans and Military Families Month mean to you?

Sabrina: National Veterans and Military Families Month is a great time to participate in events to thank  those who are veterans and actively serving, as well as their families. At Comcast, this is also a time where we highlight the services offered to our military customers as well as host meaningful discussions and fun events for all employees.

JaMichael: National Veterans and Military Families Month means even more to me after leaving the Army. Over the years I’ve had the pleasure of hearing the different experiences of each veteran and their family.  As I participate in veteran events both at Comcast and outside the company, I realize the importance of getting out into the community to help others understand what veterans and their families experienced.

Why did you join VetNet?

Sabrina: I joined VetNet and was a lead as soon as the Veterans Network ERG came into fruition. It is an amazing venture to help members of the military transitioning to a civilian job and those actively serving to help provide a broader network consisting of those who understand their position and values. It provides that camaraderie that so many of us miss when transitioning out of the military.

JaMichael: As a veteran it was a very natural transition to get involved with VetNet.  When I first joined as a member, I wanted to help my coworkers transitioning from the military and help others understand what veterans may have experienced during their military time and afterwards. VetNet has been very rewarding over the years and it’s particularly meaningful helping others at our community events.

As a veteran, what do you like about working at Comcast?

Sabrina: I like knowing that we have a program in place through Military and Veteran Affairs to help our military members and their families transitioning, and we have an amazing program set up to help those currently serving.  Having these programs in place gives our employees peace of mind knowing they have a team to reach out to for help and advice. I love our ERGs and the way they connect us, give us a broader network, and help with career and personal development. Our company wouldn’t be the same without our robust ERG programs!

JaMichael: As a veteran, I’m extremely proud to work at a company that dedicates time, money and ideas towards military events. Having programs like Hiring Our Heroes exemplifies the focus the company puts towards the military community. The resources we’ve received over the years from our team have been extremely helpful and has helped us support veterans and their families even more.

What are some of your favorite activities or memorable events you’ve participated in with VetNet?

Sabrina: Wreaths Across America is an event I look forward to doing with our Nashville VetNet chapter every year. It is an honor giving back to those who have fallen and those who served.

JaMichael: My favorite events are those during Military Appreciation Week, such as the wall of honor where we display military pictures of employees who served, including their families and friends. Another event that means a lot to me is our flag replacement program where we go out into the community and replace worn flags with new flags free of charge.

How Comcast Honors Veterans and Military Families

Comcast is proud to honor veterans and military families all year long. Learn about how a group of VetNet employees started “Operation Old Glory,” a national program to replace worn American flags, and how Comcast is dedicated to empowering military communities across the US through digital equity programs, Project UP and more. Lift Zones in the South that serve veterans are located at AOVS Madison Transitional Facility and AOVS SRO Depot Facility in Memphis, TN.

Stories of Service

This November, Comcast’s “Stories of Service” content destination on X1, Flex, and Stream features a variety of critically acclaimed films, series, and documentaries that depict the realities of war, the camaraderie among soldiers, and the sacrifices made by military families. Several influential leaders in the military community served as guest editors, and our military-connected employees also identified the movies and shows that best represent their experiences and connection to the military community. To get started, just say “Military Appreciation” into your X1 Voice Remote.

We extend a heartfelt thank you to all veterans and military families for their courage, sacrifice, and service.
