Comcast Response to Hurricane Helene’s Impact on the Southeast

Friday, October 4 @ 5:45 p.m.

The emergency response team continues to make steady growth on our restoration numbers with 73% of Helene-impacted customers now back online. Our teams are working through nearly 5,165 isolated damage locations and estimate replacing 166 miles of fiber and cable across our footprint of four states – Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.

We are asking for your help, as we are also experiencing fiber cuts as debris removal crews have been inadvertently cutting some of our new lines that have been put in place. These cuts have caused intermittent service outages and redirected crews back to previously restored neighborhoods, which could cause a further delay in return of services.

Network Update

Augusta, GA: As of this week, local power has shared electricity return of service by mid-October. We’re working in tandem with local power companies as a fast follow to restore connectivity as soon as electrical lines are cleared and poles are repaired. Additionally, our response crew on the ground must also work through debris to access our fiber lines and equipment for repair and, in some cases, rebuild. We estimate full network restoration for Augusta, GA by October 19, 2024, if not earlier for many residents.

Restoring connectivity after a major storm event can be a challenge. This part of the restoration process is often slow and tedious, as our crew must review each foot of fiber and inspect pieces of equipment to locate damage to our network. We apologize for those experiencing extended service outages, and please know that our team is working as quickly as possible to ensure every home and business has the services that are essential for their lives.

Savannah, GA: We have been able to restore 87% of our customers with more coming online every hour.  We appreciate your patience as we continue to find, fix and return services for our remaining outage customers. For those remaining customers experiencing service outages, we estimate a full network restoration for Savannah, GA by October 5, 2024.

Customers impacted in East Tennessee & Southwest Virginia (Tri-Cities) in areas that our teams have been granted access to and power has returned, we are seeing a predominant number of our customers coming online. Our teams will continue to be positioned throughout, and once declared safe to do so, we will restore connectivity in some of the heaviest hit areas.

The emergency response team continues to make steady growth on our restoration numbers with 71% of Helene-impacted Comcast Business and Xfinity customers now back online. Our teams are working through nearly 5,165 isolated damage locations and estimate replacing 165 miles of fiber and cable across our footprint of four states – Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.

For predominantly restored cities – such as Atlanta and Charleston – our teams are continuing to monitor the area, going street by street, line by line to visit each house and business to ensure connectivity. If you have power but services are still disconnected, there may have been damage to your fiber line directly impacting your home or business. Please visit your Xfinity App to contact a representative for information and updates.

We also continue to experience fiber cuts as debris removal crews have been inadvertently cutting some of our new lines that have been put in place and these cuts have caused intermittent service outages in places like Atlanta, Charleston and Savannah.

We apologize for these outages and know how important our services are for you and your family.

Network Update

In the hardest hit areas of Augusta, GA, we are continuing to work with power companies to restore services once electricity has returned to homes or businesses. As a part of this process, we are assessing and removing downed trees, limbs and debris in and around previously flooded areas to safely repair and rebuild our network.

For our Savannah, GA customers, we have been able to restore about 83% of our customers with more coming online every hour. We appreciate your patience as we continue to find, fix and return services for our remaining outage customers.

  • Augusta, GA – Exchange
  • Augusta, GA – Windsor Spring
  • Evans, GA – Mullins Colony

The Xfinity store at 529 Mullins Colony Drive, Evans, GA will be open from 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. starting Friday, October 4 through Monday, October 7. Additional store locations and hours of operation are forthcoming for the Augusta area.

Wednesday, October 2 @ 1:45 p.m.

As electricity is still being restored across Helene’s footprint, we are bolstering our response crews for continued 24/7 work rotations to accommodate customers with returning power. Our teams are working through nearly 4,000 isolated damage locations and estimate replacing 120+ miles of fiber and cable.

This part of the restoration phase may go slower than we would like, as it is a tedious and a very detailed process of assessing the extent of damage, repairing, and in some cases, rebuilding our fiber network.

Our response teams are making steady progress across the heaviest hit areas across our footprint. We’re still accessing some areas of Northeast Tennessee/Southwest Virginia to locate damage to our network and equipment, working alongside public utilities in Augusta and Savannah to restore customers as soon as power returns, and responding to storm-related pocket outages on streets and neighborhoods throughout the region.

Xfinity techs work to restore connectivity after Helene.

Additionally last night, we pulled teams and resources as quickly as possible to repair a significant fiber cut that impacted Metro Charleston customers. The cut occurred while a third-party crew was clearing debris on a fiber line that runs between Charleston and Augusta. As of 6:30 this morning, the fiber line was repaired and response teams are continuing to monitor the situation. We thank the community for their patience and understanding.

Help Us Avoid Fiber Cuts

With storms, there is an extensive and often exhaustive clean-up for all impacted. During this process, clean-up crews, and home and business owners may accidentally cut live and working fiber lines which would cause intermittent outages for customers that were once restored. Please be careful and avoid lines whenever possible.

To report a downed line, you can chat with an Xfinity Assistant through the Xfinity App or the Xfinity website. Additionally, here are a few tips to help you and your neighbors stay connected:

**Please note: only areas that have power will have active hotspots. The WiFi hotspot map will list all locations, but only hotspots with electricity will be active. As power is restored, additional WiFi hotspot options will become available.

Help Us Avoid Fiber Cuts

With severe weather clean-up and restoration, home and business owners, and power and debris crews may inadvertently cut temporary fiber lines which would cause intermittent outages for customers that were once restored. For those experiencing secondary service interruption, we apologize for the inconvenience, and we are repairing and restoring our lines as quickly as possible.

Even though the storm has passed, we urge you to stay safety aware. To report a downed line, you can chat with an Xfinity Assistant through the Xfinity App or the Xfinity website. Additionally, here are a few tips to help you and your neighbors stay connected:

Sunday, September 29 @ 5:00 p.m.

We want to thank local power companies, state and local Department of Transportation (DOT) teams for their partnership in getting customers connectivity. With their assistance, our teams have been able to access and complete work on some of the heaviest impacted areas across Georgia, South Carolina and Tennessee. Unfortunately, with road closures due to flooding around the Lowcountry (parts of Savannah, GA and Charleston, SC area), progress has slowed – but we are staying in close contact to gain access as soon as possible.

Our Emergency Response Teams

Pulling in volunteer technicians from as far away as Michigan, as well as local contract teams, we have 300+ response crew members working in 24/7 rotations to address damage to our network or equipment. Although their bucket truck may not have our branding, or you may not see them on your street, rest assured – we are there. In some situations, the damage may not be near your home or business – but instead miles away. Our team is dedicated to getting you the services you need.

Comcast's storm response to Helene includes UTV.
