Comcast Awards Grants to Support Digital Inclusion and Literacy in Greater Charleston

The funding is part of Project UP, Comcast’s comprehensive $1 billion commitment to help build a future of unlimited possibilities

Comcast is pleased to announce two grants to support digital inclusion and literacy initiatives in the Greater Charleston area. The Tri-County Cradle to Career Collaborative (TCCC) will receive $25,000 and the Charleston Digital Corridor (CDC) will receive $10,000. These contributions reflect Comcast’s commitment to empower communities through the use of technology and by teaching people digital skills.

In 2022, TCCC launched the Lowcountry Digital Equity Coalition, a regional alliance representing businesses, governments, and other organizations dedicated to fostering digital inclusion across Greater Charleston. With the new grants from Comcast, the Coalition will expand its partnership with Palmetto Goodwill to enhance digital navigator training and digital literacy services in the Tri-County area. The focus will include offering programs that will benefit families impacted by the discontinuation of the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) and provide refurbished laptops to students through a collaboration with Goodwill Industries. Last year, Comcast donated $17,500 to TCCC to support efforts to help educate families about the importance of broadband adoption.

“We are proud to continue our support of the Tri-County Cradle to Career Collaborative and their mission to bridge the digital divide in our community. By expanding digital navigator training and literacy services, we are empowering residents with the skills and resources they need to thrive in today’s digital world.'”

Additionally, Comcast has awarded a $10,000 grant to the CDC to further efforts in digital skills and literacy training for both children and adults. In May, Comcast presented a $25,000 grant to the CDC and celebrated the opening of a new Xfinity WiFi-connected Lift Zone at the CDC Learning Center, which provides access to free WiFi to the entire community.

Lift Zones provide Internet access outside the home and complements Comcast’s Internet Essentials program that offers in-home broadband connectivity. Lift Zones help students, veterans, and anyone who for a variety of reasons, including homelessness or housing insecurity, need somewhere to connect to the Internet. Lift Zones are part of Project UP, Comcast’s $1 billion commitment to advance digital equity and economic mobility. Comcast has created more than 1,250 Lift Zones across the country.

The Comcast grant supports the CDC Learning Center, which offers pragmatic, affordable, and inclusive tech and business classes for Lowcountry residents of all ages. For example, the CDC recently introduced a STEM summer camp for 7th- and 8th-grade students to emphasize early exposure to science, technology, engineering, and math education.

Over the last four years, Comcast has donated nearly $100,000 to the CDC to support and improve economic mobility in Charleston through digital skills training.

These initiatives underscore Comcast’s dedication to fostering digital equity and preparing communities for the future. Through strategic partnerships and targeted investments, Comcast is helping to ensure that Greater Charleston residents can succeed in an increasingly digital world.
