1-Gig Speeds Available to Residents and Businesses Later in 2017
TUSCALOOSA, AL – Feb. 27, 2017 – Comcast today announced plans to begin offering gigabit Internet service to residential and business customers in Tuscaloosa later in 2017.
The company will deliver the super-fast speeds with DOCSIS 3.1 technology, which uses the existing wiring that most people already have in their homes and offices. As a result, it has the potential to reach more customers even faster and allows for broad deployment across communities. To enjoy the service, all customers will need to do is install a new DOCSIS 3.1 compatible cable modem that is capable of delivering gigabit speeds.
With a 1 gigabit connection, residential customers can:
- Download a 5 Gigabyte HD movie in 40 seconds;
- Download a 600 Megabyte TV episode in four seconds;
- Download a 150 Megabyte music album in two seconds; and
- Download a 15 Gigabyte video game in two minutes.
“Comcast’s commitment to bringing ultra-fast speeds to Tuscaloosa is a major milestone for our city,” said Tuscaloosa Mayor Walter Maddox. “We appreciate Comcast’s continued investment in Tuscaloosa, and look forward to enjoying all of the advantages of having the nation’s most advanced technology.”
“Between today’s exciting news, and the upcoming grand opening of our new Xfinity Customer Retail Center in Tuscaloosa, our strong investment in Alabama continues,” said Comcast Regional SVP Doug Guthrie. “The launch of gigabit service puts Tuscaloosa squarely on the map as a city able to offer a premier technology experience to its residents and businesses.”
Comcast is currently selling DOCSIS 3.1 residential and business services in Atlanta, Nashville, Chicago and Detroit.
