New Offerings Put Full TV Experience on Smart Phones, Tablets and Laptops; Enable Streaming and Downloading of DVR Programming for Viewing on the Go
Huntsville, AL (Feb. 16, 2016) – Comcast announced today that X1 customers in Huntsville, Mobile, Florence, Gadsden and Tuscaloosa can view live television on any mobile device in their home starting today. Additionally, they will be able to download recorded programs from their DVR onto their mobile devices for viewing anytime and anywhere, a concept known as ‘TV Everywhere.’
X1 DVR with Cloud Technology provides access to virtually the entire channel line-up plus Xfinity On Demand programming on mobile devices and computers. The content is presented to customers via X1.
New Comcast customers who choose to subscribe will require a new X1 set top box. Existing X1 customers would be able to view live content on additional mobile devices immediately, but must call Comcast for activation to view their DVR recordings outside their home.
“The typical customer is increasingly watching live programming on multiple devices around the house – not just on the TV in their living room,” said Kerry McKelvey, vice president of sales and marketing for Comcast. “With this launch, any screen in the house becomes a personal TV, and previously recorded programs can be accessed anytime, anywhere.”
According to the Consumer Electronics Association, nearly 46 percent of all TV households in 2014 watched video on a laptop, notebook or netbook, and 43 percent viewed videos on a smartphone. That’s up from 38 percent and 33 percent, respectively, from the year prior.
To deliver these new features to Xfinity TV customers, Comcast has launched an Xfinity TV app for iOS and Android tablets and smartphones, and a dedicated portal for viewing on computers. To live stream their TV lineups or watch DVR and On Demand programming while on tablets or smartphones in their homes, customers can simply download the Xfinity TV app from the App Store, open the app and sign-in with their Xfinity TV credentials.
Live in-home streaming and X1 DVR with Cloud Technology are now available in multiple markets, including Atlanta, Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, Houston, Nashville, San Francisco and Washington, D.C.
