Comcast Begins Rollout Of Residential 2 Gig Service In Nashville And Middle Tennessee
Gigabit Pro Available Next Month to More than 500,000 Customers;
Multi-Gigabit Service Will Bring the Fastest Speeds to the Most People in the Country
NASHVILLE, TN – May 6, 2015 – Comcast today announced it will offer residential multi-gigabit broadband service to more than half a million customers in Nashville and surrounding communities in Middle Tennessee starting later this month. Gigabit Pro is a symmetrical, 2 gigabit-per-second (Gbps) service that will be delivered via a fiber-to-the-home solution. Service will be offered broadly across the metro area and surrounding Middle-Tennessee communities, and will be the fastest residential Internet speed in the country. Last month, Comcast launched Gigabit Pro in Chattanooga, Atlanta, Florida and California and plans to roll out the service to 18 million homes by the end of the year.
“Our commitment to deliver the fastest speeds to the most homes in Tennessee continues with today’s announcement,” said Doug Guthrie, SVP of Comcast Cable’s South Region. “As one of Nashville’s largest employers, we have steadily invested in our technology, added to our employee base and unveiled new products and services, making the launch of Gigabit Pro the latest in a series of investments across the state.”
Gigabit Pro will be available to any home within close proximity of Comcast’s fiber network and will require an installation of professional-grade equipment. The company has fiber at the core of its network and, for the past decade, it has been extending it deeper into neighborhoods and closer to homes. To date, Comcast has built out more than 145,000 route miles of fiber across its service area.
“Nashville continues to enjoy a reputation as a technology-forward city that can offer residents and businesses alike the fastest speeds and best services in the nation,” said Nashville Mayor Karl Dean. “We appreciate being the beneficiary of the nation’s fastest speeds and thank Comcast for continuing to invest in Nashville.”
Comcast has been delivering multi-gig (up to 10 Gbps) Ethernet service to businesses in Nashville and Middle Tennessee since 2010. The company currently serves more than 1.5 million businesses nationwide. Earlier this year, Comcast announced a technology partnership with the Tennessee Titans to deliver a redundant 1 Gigabit connection to LP Field that will offer fans Wi-Fi for the first time. The solution also prepares the team for future demand as Comcast’s fiber connections can easily scale up to 10 Gbps.
Comcast has been doubling the capacity of its network at least every 18 months and the company has increased speeds for its subscribers 15 times in the past 13 years. In addition to fast, wired broadband tiers, Xfinity Internet customers have access to the industry’s fastest in-home wireless gateway capable of offering up to 700 Mbps Wi-Fi connections.
