Comcast Deploying 600 New Outdoor Wi-Fi Hotspots across Huntsville and Tuscaloosa

Huntsville, AL – (June 22, 2017) – Comcast announced today it plans to install 600 new Xfinity WiFi hotspots in popular outdoor areas throughout Huntsville and Tuscaloosa over the next few months. Comcast has already installed thousands of home and business hotspots in both cities.

Selected hotspot locations include areas with heavy foot traffic, including public parks, shopping centers, restaurants, schools, and several on the main campus of the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. The growing network of outdoor, business and home hotspots allows Xfinity Internet customers to connect their mobile devices at no additional charge, while non-customers are offered two free sessions per month.

The local Wi-Fi expansion follows two recent announcements that show Comcast increasingly capitalizing on its growing national network of 17 million in-home and outdoor hotspots.

In April, the company introduced Xfinity Mobile, a wireless service that uses America’s largest, most reliable 4G LTE network and the nation’s largest Wi-Fi network to deliver customers a better wireless experience that saves them money on the most popular devices from Apple, Samsung and LG.

More recently, the company launched Xfinity xFi, a free in-home digital dashboard that lets customers set up their home Wi-Fi, find their password, see what devices are connected, troubleshoot issues, set parental controls and even pause Wi-Fi access during dinner or bedtime.  xFi is a single management platform that can expand as a wider variety of home devices and appliances become connected to the Internet, a concept widely known as the Internet of Things (IoT). Over the next several years, analysts predict billions of Wi-Fi connected devices will be brought into consumers’ homes.

“Today’s announcement is a true game-changer for Comcast customers in Huntsville and Tuscaloosa,” said Vic Pascarelli, Comcast Vice President of Sales and Marketing.  “Accessible Wi-Fi service supports a more seamless online experience for our customers, especially in the high-traffic areas where connectivity is in such demand.”

Comcast’s advanced Wi-Fi network consists of:

  • Xfinity WiFi Hotspots in Business Locations: Most Comcast Business Internet customers are eligible to receive an Xfinity WiFi hotspot for no additional charge when they order service. This is a value-added feature that directly improves their patrons’ experience. Comcast has deployed hotspots to the area’s restaurants, offices and retail establishments. The recently launched WiFi Pro is a next generation business Wi-Fi solution that lets businesses deliver a great customer experience and promotes business growth.
  • Xfinity Home Hotspots: These provide residential customers with Xfinity Wireless Gateways the ability to have a second “xfinitywifi” signal (or SSID) in their home that is separate and distinct from their private and secure home Wi-Fi signal. This second signal provides visiting Xfinity Internet customers Wi-Fi access without the need to use the homeowner’s private network and password.

Finding the nearest Xfinity WiFi hotspot

Most Xfinity Internet customers can access Xfinity WiFi hotspots by selecting “xfinitywifi” from the list of available networks on their laptops or mobile devices and entering their Comcast email and password. The Xfinity WiFi App, available for download on both iOS and Android devices, makes it easy to locate business and outdoor hotspots, or customers can visit the hotspot finder map at www.xfinity.com/wifi.
